Making a difference... one child at a time

Jo and Jenny get all hygienic!

Jo and Jenny, third year medical students from Sheffield University (UK), flew out to India ready to learn all about tropical diseases in India. What they didn't realise was that we had things in store for them to get to the bottom (excuse the pun) of toilet and hygiene issues with the children!

They were absolutely fantastic students right from the word go, a pleasure to teach, and they were ready to put their hands to anything. From seeing the children in the clinics, entertaining and teaching the kids how to play, running a youth event, naming a baby (!) through to painting toilet blocks... nothing seemed to phase them.

A highlight for the children was when they performed their own hygiene skit to teach the kids about the importance of using a toilet and washing hands afterwards. The children now are washing their hands daily! The new ‘peacock’ dance they performed was rather unforgettable too! :)

As part of their placement Love the One set them a task to design health promotion messages in the form of pictures to educate the children. We were so delighted with their efforts that we called the local painters in to reproduce their work onto the toilet block walls... their legacy now remains!

Jo and Jenny... thank you for all your help and for making us laugh daily! We and the children miss you guys and do hope you’ll be back for another visit soon!!
